Biola upsets No. 12 Westmont in GSAC semis

Westmont Women’s Soccer (12-5-1), ranked at number 14 in the NAIA, suffered a 2-1 loss to Biola (12-6-1) on Friday afternoon in a Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament semifinal game at Thorrington Field.

The Warriors will now have to wait until November 12 to learn if they will receive an at-large berth in the NAIA National Tournament.

Biola advances to the GSAC Championship game next Friday at Vanguard. The Lions defeated The Master’s by a score of 2-0 in today’s other semifinal game.

Of greater concern may be an injury to midfielder Aolani Rueff. The senior sustained a knee injury in the twentieth minute and did not return to the game. She will be evaluated in the morning to determine the extent of her injuries.

Biola’s first goal came in the sixteenth minute when Jessica Austin passed the ball from the end line to Ashley Cooley at the front of the coal. Cooley delivered the goal from eight yards out.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead on a goal by Chrissy King in the sixty-second minute. Austin passed the ball from the right side past the face of the goal to King who finished from five yards out.

The Warriors took one goal back in the seventy-ninth minute when a scramble in front of the goal resulted in Jenny Martinez knocking it in from point blank range.

The NAIA Tournament opening round games will be held at 15 campus locations on November 17. Winners of the opening round will advance to the NAIA final site where they will compete for a national title beginning on November 26. The championship game is schedule for Saturday, December 1.
