Madison Serrano posted 20 kills and a .487 attack percentage as #10 Westmont Volleyball (18-5, 3-4 GSAC) posted a 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-18) win over Golden State Athletic Conference opponent Hope International (3-12, 1-6) on Saturday in Murchison Gymnasium. As a team, the Warriors hit .327 while holding their opponents to a .061 attack percentage.
“It feels good to be back on the winning side of things,” said Westmont head coach Patti Cook, whose team had lost the last three matches. “It definitely looks brighter over here.
“I thought that our defensive effort was good tonight. The work we put into our defense and our blocking paid off. Hope International ran pretty high sets, so we got to build our confidence on our blocking. We had plenty of time to get there, to push over the net and to set a block for our defense to play around.
“Before the match, I said to the team that I wanted them to keep on doing what we do best, which is outworking teams and playing scrappy volleyball. I was pleased to see that implemented. Kristin Schroeder led the charge in that area. Despite playing with flu like symptoms, she was able to do what we needed her to do – pass well and dig a lot of balls.”
Schroeder, a senior libero and team captain, tallied 13 digs and 11 service receptions.
“Madison and Ciara (Turner) were back to their old selves of being able to find the seams and detonate on quick sets. I think we overwhelmed Hope International’s block with the speed of our offense. That was in large part due to Schroeder who kept a lot of dug balls in system so we could run plays off of digs in transition.”
Turner notched eight kills on the evening while amassing a .375 attack percentage.
