SBCC scored twice in the first 21 minutes on Tuesday afternoon en route to a 4-0 blanking of Hancock in a WSC North women’s soccer match at La Playa Stadium.
The defending WSC champion Vaqueros (7-2-4, 3-0-2) got goals from four players and assists by two others. Goalie Brianna Robinson recorded her sixth shutout and second in three games. Hancock fell to 4-6-2 and 2-2-0.
Sonja Gustafsson headed in a corner kick from Samantha Maxwell in the fifth minute and Brandie Harris made it 2-0 in the 21st minute. Alexandra Abbott lofted a pass to the left side and Harris beat the keeper 1-on-1.
“We played OK but we could have played better,” said Harris, a freshman forward from Dos Pueblos High. “I ran down the line, got a nice pass from Alex and I was wide open.”
Harris is the No. 2 scorer in the WSC with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists.
SBCC dominated the first 30 minutes of the second half, outshooting the Bulldogs 13-1 and scoring a pair of goals. For the game, the shots favored Santa Barbara 19-10, including 10-5 in shots on goal.
Sandy Grimaldo tallied her eighth goal in the 58th minute, dribbling up the right side and beating the keeper to the near post. Justina Silva scored for the third straight game with a 27-yard rocket in the 73rd minute.
“We played well today and created a lot of opportunities,” said assistant coach Paul Hart. “Nice to see Brandie get one back, she’s been battling an injury lately.
“Our goalie, Brianna, has been training hard. She deserved the shutout. She didn’t really have much to do but she made a good save near the end in the middle of a scrum situation.”
The Vaqueros completed a five-game homestand on Tuesday and played their final regular-season home match. They’ll spend the next 3½ weeks on the road.
After a 10-day break, SBCC opens a five-game road trip at Oxnard on Friday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m.
