Former UCSB basketball player Greg Somogyi was released by the Los Angeles Lakers on Monday after spending training camp with the team.
The 7’3″ center had not played in the last three preseason games for L.A.
He had this to say on Twitter on Monday: “I want to thank everyone for all of your support. My time on the Lakers has been such a great experience. Time to plan my next step!”
Somogyi played for the Lakers’ summer league team in Las Vegas after spending four years at UCSB. He averaged 1.2 points, 1.6 rebounds in five games in Vegas.
Career averages at UCSB were 3.5 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 12.2 minutes per game.
Chris Douglas Roberts was released at the same time by the Lakers, cutting their roster to 16. The Lakers must cut one more player before the regular season starts next Tuesday in order to reach the roster maximum of 15.
