San Marcos (1-7, 0-2) at Santa Barbara (5-2, 0-1), 7 p.m. — The city rivals come into this game after losses to Buena — Santa Barbara two weeks ago and San Marcos last week. The homestanding Dons can’t afford another loss if they want to play for a Channel League championship. They have the advantage in playmakers and experience, but the Big Game usually brings out the best in the underdog. San Marcos coach Anthony Linebaugh said his team has yet to play its best game. To do it against Santa Barbara would make the Royals’ season. The pick: Santa Barbara
Nordhoff (7-0, 1-0) at Carpinteria (4-3, 0-1), 7:30 p.m. — CIF-SS Northwest Division top-ranked Nordhoff was featured in the online version of L.A. Times on Thursday. Can you say jinx? The Rangers are solid on both sides of the ball, and they showed last week in a win over Oak Park that they can play physical. If Carpinteria’s offensive line can give quarterback Ian Craddock time to throw and the Warriors play all out from the opening kickoff, this game could turn into a shootout. Carpinteria will be celebrating homecoming and the 25th anniversary of the 1987 CIF championship. The pick: Nordhoff
Bishop Diego (7-0, 2-0) at Oak Park (4-4, 1-1), 7:30 p.m. — The No. 2-ranked Cardinals will need to be physical in the trenches playing against a big Oak Park line. The Eagles gave unbeaten Nordhoff a battle last week. Quarterback Jack Gerstenberger threw a pair of touchdown passes but was also intercepted twice. Bishop’s passing game has improved, making its offense even more explosive. The Cardinals, however, have hurt themselves with fumbles. The pick: Bishop Diego
