Cate overcame an injury to quarterback-linebacker Kyle Mayfield and beat Dunn 51-33 to wrap up a perfect Condor League football season on Saturday.
The Rams went 4-0 to claim the third league title in the program’s eight seasons.
Mayfield suffered an ankle injury while returning an interception in the second half of a game in which the Rams fell behind 7-0.
Max Vasquez answered for Cate with a 61-yard touchdown run. Vasquez scored again on a 9-yard run to put the Rams into the lead for good.
Cate extended its lead with three more touchdowns in the second quarter to go up 33-7. Mayfield ran for one and passed for another and receiver Abe Tall scored on a reverse.
Cate’s offense slowed after Mayfield was injured as he was tackled after intercepting a Bryce McKibbin pass.
“The injury to Mayfield took the wind out of our sails,” said Cate coach Ben Soto. “We’re thinking about our fallen quarterback.”
Dunn scored a pair of touchdowns in the third quarter to make it 33-19. But Cate was never in danger as players came off the bench and played well.
“The guys that got in stepped up and got the job done,” said Soto.
Cate finishes the regular season with a 7-1 record.
