The rebuilding process of the Bishop Diego girls volleyball program had a breakthrough Monday night, as the Cardinals won a five-set match against Oak Park in Tri-Valley League play.
Bishop prevailed 25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 15-25, 22-20.
“We have been winning a set or two in the last few matches, but tonight the girls put it together for a full match and made numerous offense and defensive plays throughout he match to secure the victory,” assistant coach John Sener said. “We had some real step-up performances tonight from our back-up setter Sami Soto who put up 38 assists and spread the ball around to our outside hitters and middles.”
Outside hitters Lauren Underwood and Hanna Brand were solid, posting 13 and 10 kills, respectively. In the middle, Annalise Morando and Emily Lash “were almost unstoppable,” Sener said.
He also praised the passing and defense of Erin Linehan and Josie McCoy. Linehan was second on the team in digs with 13. Underwood led the team with 27 digs.
The score went back and forth in the fifth set. Soto served a tough ball down the line for the match point.
Bishop is 3-9 and 2-6 in the TVL.
