The Sandy and Brandie Show was on display Friday afternoon in the home debut for the SBCC women’s soccer team.
Sandy Grimaldo scored two goals and Brandie Harris assisted on both as the Vaqueros overcame a two-goal deficit to tie Chaffey 2-2 at La Playa Stadium.
The Vaqueros remained unbeaten (4-0-1) and improved to 18-3-1 in their last 22 home appearances.
“We got off to a slow start but we got through it,” said Grimaldo, who has three goals and four assists. “We figured out what to do, we just needed to cut down the angles. Brandie and I are really close which is why we work well together.”
Angie Herbst gave the visitors a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the game, ending a 364-minute scoreless streak by goalie Brianna Robinson and the Vaquero defense. Jasmine Medina scored on a rebound to give the Cougars (2-1-1) a 2-0 advantage in the 15th minute. One minute later, Harris fed a through ball to Grimaldo, who beat the keeper from the left side.
Midfielder Samantha Maxwell had three good scoring chances in the middle of the first half, including a corner kick that was saved by a defender.
In the 58th minute, Harris crossed the ball from the left side and Grimaldo headed it in for the equalizer.
Harris had her goal-scoring streak snapped at four games. She has a point in all five games and is one of the state’s top scorers with 14 points (six goals, two assists).
Chaffey outshot the Vaqueros 16-13, including 10-5 in the second half. Robinson made six of her eight saves in the last 45 minutes.
“It was disappointing to be two goals down and we’d warned the girls that this was quite a decent team,” said coach John Sisterson. “We just didn’t compete at the start. But we responded and got within a goal at halftime.
The Vaqueros travel to East L.A. on Monday for a 6 p.m. contest.
