THE NEXT LEVEL: Schwartz is keeping goalkeepers busy

Avery Schwartz is knocking on the door at Yale.

The freshman out of Cate has played in all eight men?s soccer matches ? with three starts ? for the Bulldogs and ranks second in shots with 16 and first in shots on goal with nine.

With the kind of drive Schwartz has on the soccer field, it won?t be long before he puts one in the back of the net. At Cate, he scored a school-record 38 goals in his junior season and holds the career record with 101 goals.

ON THE RUN: Sergey Sushchikh of UCLA?s cross country team finished 12th overall and was the No. 3 Bruin finisher at the Pac-12 Preview at Robinson?s Ranch Golf Course in Santa Clarita. The former All-CIF star from Dos Pueblos ran the 8k course in 25:02.

UCLA, ranked 27th in the nation, finished second behind Northern Arizona in the men?s team competition.

UCLA is hosting the Pac-12 Championships on Oct. 27.

STILL GOING: Former Dos Pueblos running standout Erin Campbell is in her second year running cross country at Whitman College, a Division 3 school in Walla Walla, Wash.

FORCE AT THE NET: Carly Wopat has put away 114 kills in 10 matches and is hitting .382 for the seventh-ranked Stanford women?s volleyball team. The junior middle attacker from Dos Pueblos leads the team in kills per set at 3.17.

BACK IN SO CAL: Former UCSB soccer stars Luis Silva and Eric Avila treated their family and friends to a good time in their return to Southern California on Saturday.

Playing for Toronto FC against the Los Angeles Galaxy at the Home Depot Center, Silva assisted on a goal and scored one, and Avila assisted on Silva?s goal in a 4-2 loss.

After the loss, Silva, Avila and Toronto flew out of L.A. to El Salvador, where they?ll face CD Aguila on Tuesday in a CONCACAF Champions League group stage match.
