Friday was a frustrating night for SBCC as the Vaqueros settled for a 0-0 men’s soccer tie with Glendale at La Playa Stadium.
Santa Barbara dominated in shots (24-13) and shots on goal (8-3) but couldn’t get one past either keeper for the visitors. The defending WSC champions are 1-2-1 in the WSC and 3-4-1 overall. Glendale is 1-1-2 and 1-7-1.
“All we needed was that one bit of luck and we would have scored early in the first half and made it a comfortable game,” said Adam Colton, a freshman midfielder from England. “I had a couple of chances at the end.”
At the end of the second half in stoppage time, Colton had a nice give-and-go play with Brayden Jeworski. Colton got a shot off near the right post but a defender blocked it, leading to a corner kick.
Jeworski delivered a perfect CK to Colton but his header went a few feet right of the target.
Jamie Sporcic had a breakaway that was saved in the 22nd minute and Connor Stout’s hard shot in the 25th minute was cleared by a defender.
Santa Barbara has scored just two goals in the last five games while allowing two.
“We were happy with our play in the first half and we told the boys if they keep playing the same, the goals will come,” said coach John Sisterson. “Unfortunately, they didn’t even though we dominated possession. We just couldn’t find the back of the net. Their keeper made some good saves.”
Sisterson praised the effort of forward Sammba Sowe and midfielder Dan Flitcroft.
The Vaqueros will take on L.A. Mission on Tuesday at 3 p.m. The game will be played at L.A. Pierce in Woodland Hills, due to the renovation of Mission’s field.
