The San Marcos boys demonstrated excellent pack running and finished second at the Lompoc River Run cross country race on Wednesday.
The Royals top five runners finished within 15 seconds of each other and placed behind Arroyo Grande by a 21-38 score. Lompoc (105), St. Joseph (108) and Pioneer Valley (117) rounded out the boys field.
In the girls meet, San Marcos also finished second to Arroyo Grande, 37-52. They were followed by St. Joseph (94), Lompoc (99), Pioneer Valley (106) and Orcutt Academy (207).
San Marcos’ Jewel Fisher placed second in the girls race with a 5k time of 19:09. Freshman Brooke Donahue was fourth in 19:13. The other Royals finishers included Juliana Logan (9th in 20:09), Jordan Jenkins (17th in 21:15), freshman Xochito Pacheco (20th in 21:19), Rachel Fay (21st in 21:19) and Krista Bowdle (22nd in 21:25).
Sophomore Walker Odell led the San Marcos boys with a fourth-place finish in 16:14. He was followed by Nicolas Swider in fifth in 16:15, Joe Logan in 6th in 16:18, Eric Salas in 11th in 16:22 and Ryan Sorenson in 13th in 16:29. Alex Heuchert was 14th in 16:48 and Grant Bradford came in 18th in 17:06.
“I’m very happy,” San Marcos coach Lawrence Stehmeier said of the Royals’ first race. “I’m excited about the boys finishing 15 seconds apart. My two top guys made a wrong turn and ran 200-300 meters further.
“We are really looking forward to next Wednesday for the league meet at Dos Pueblos to see what we have to do to get to CIF.”
He noted that Juliana and Joe Logan are twins and both were the No. 3 finishers for the Royals at Lompoc.
“They might be the fastest twins he town,” he said.
