Providence Hall played its first official league game in any sport on Tuesday, as the girls volleyball team fell to Cate 25-19, 25-18, 25-21 in a Condor League matchup played in Westmont’s Murchison Gym.

The Lions athletic programs have joined the Condor League this year after playing two seasons independently.

Providence Hall’s Cody Niessen sets a teammate in Tuesday’s Condor League match.

“So it’s really exciting for us,” said Lions coach Laura Trudelle.

It didn’t go Providence Hall’s way, however, as the Lions’ six-game winning streak was snapped.

“Now that we’re in the Condor League, we can’t have mediocre practices and just walk into the gym and win,” Trudelle explained. “It was defeintely a wake-up call.”

Cydney Pierce totaled a game-high 14 kills for the Rams, who have only played two matches this season.?Peyton Shelbourn recorded 13 kills and Hannah Bowlin tallied five aces on 19 serves with only two service errors. Xandrine Griffin added seven kills and Maddie Becker 19 digs.

For Providence Hall, Cody Niessen and Olivia Barroca matched each other with four kills. Lacey Gonzalez collected seven assists and 10 digs while Ozie LeSage contributed a career-high four blocks.

Providence Hall (6-3) takes on Thacher in their next match while Cate (1-1) will compete at the Carpinteria Tournament on Saturday.

“We played like I expected,” said Rams head coach Greg Novak. “We’ve been working a lot on the roles on the team. We pretty much stuck to it.”

“We just try to play smart and consistent.”
