Kyle Mayfield tore it up for the Cate eight-man football team on Saturday, accounting for a school-record nine touchdowns to lead the Rams to a season-opening 70-40 win over visiting Mojave.
Mayfield, a senior quarterback, passed for five scores and rushed for four, as Cate scored on all but one offensive possession in the game. He completed 13 of 22 passes for 218 yards and carried the ball 20 times for 252.
Running back Austin Gallegos caught eight passes for 136 yards and scored four touchdowns for the Rams, who trailed at one point in the game 16-13. Michael Martinez also caught a touchdown pass from Mayfield.
