Oregon State scored goals early in the first and second halves and it was enough as the visiting Beavers beat UCSB 2-0 on Friday at Meredith Field at Harder Stadium.
OSU (5-1-0) scored its first goal at the 9:26 mark. Jenna Richardson received a pass from Megan Miller at the upper-left corner of the penalty box. After driving left-to-right along the top of the box, Richardson blasted a shot straightaway that eluded Gaucho (0-4-1) goalkeeper Makenna Henry for the first score of the game.
The Beavers doubled their lead in the 47th minute when Haley Shaw pounded home a rebound after Olivia Lovell’s shot was blocked by Henry and trickled out in front of the goal box.
UCSB threatened repeatedly in the final 25 minutes. In the 55th minute, freshman Sara Feder took a pass from sophomore Kelly McGrath and headed it towards the goal. The ball, however, hit the crossbar and the Gauchos were denied again.
In the 74th minute, Feder received a pass from senior Dyanne Anderson and headed it just to the left the goal. Two minutes later, senior Erin Ortega took a dish from Feder and slid a shot that seemed destined for the goal, but was deflected and went just right of the goal.
The Gauchos had several more opportunities in the closing minutes but could not break through.
Overall, UCSB had the best of the match, outshooting Oregon State by a 13-5 margin. The Beavers scored on two of their three shots on goal, but their goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme recorded five saves to secure the shutout.
Santa Barbara returns to action on Monday, Sept. 10 when it travels to Cal State Bakersfield for a 5:00 p.m. match against the Roadrunners. The Gauchos will return home on Friday, Sept. 14 to host the University of San Francisco.
