Gauchos cap productive weekend with 6-2 romp

SEATTLE – UCSB’s scoring prowess was on full display Sunday in a 6-2 win over Seattle. Six different players scored for the No. 6-ranked Gauchos, who improved to 5-0-1. They’ll take a four-game winning streak into Friday night’s showdown with UCLA at Harder Stadium.

UCSB picked up where it left off on Friday evening at San Diego, where it scored three second-half goals on its way to a 3-0 victory. The Gauchos scored three goals in the first half.

Junior Achille Campion opened the scoring in the 18th minute with his second goal of the weekend and his team-leading fifth goal this season. Junior Daniel Welsh started the play by chipping the ball to Campion, who was 10-yards out on the right side of the box.

Just over two minutes later, senior Nic Ryan sent a free kick into the box. After the ball was redirected, junior Goffin Boyoko trapped it with his chest and fired it into the goal for his third goal of the year.

With just 35 seconds remaining in the first half, junior Dom Sarle played a through ball into the box to Javier Castro, who was left unmarked. Castro ripped the ball from 10 yards out into the goal to put the Gauchos ahead, 3-0, heading into halftime.

The break did not slow the Gaucho onslaught. In the 58th minute, senior Machael David beat Seattle goalkeeper Jake Feener from 18-yards out with a shot to the near post. The goal, which was assisted by Sarle, marked the first of the season for David, who was playing in front of a hometown crowd.

UCSB capped its streak of 10 unanswered goals – dating back to last Friday’s game against Valparaiso – with a strike from Sarle less than two minutes after David’s goal.

Mathew Glodack fed a through ball to Sarle, who had penetrated into the box and slid the ball past the goalkeeper from 15-yards out. It marked the first goal of the season for Sarle, who had a stellar weekend after also tallying a trio of assists between the two road matches.

Seattle was able to post a pair of goals to avoid the shutout. In the 64th minute, Haddadi Hamza deflected a cross fro Miles Rodriguez-Nilsen into the Gaucho goal. Ten minutes later, Bello Enrique converted a penalty kick to cut the UCSB lead to 5-2.

The Gauchos would have the final say, however, when freshman Charlie Miller scored his first collegiate goal. In the 79th minute, Miller stole the ball 30 yards out from the goal, dribbled it up the right side of the field and let loose a shot from 10-yards out to bring the score to 6-2.

The six-goal output marked the most by the Gauchos since their 6-0 win over Cal State Fullerton on Oct. 11, 2011. UCSB has had multiple goals in every game this season and in 14 of its last 15, dating back to the 2011 campaign.

In the win, UCSB out-shot Seattle 21-11 – 14-4 in shots-on-goal – and led in corner kicks, 12-3.

Gaucho goalkeeper Austin Mansker made two saves for UCSB while Jake Feener had six for the Redhawks and reserve keeper Shane Haworth had two in the final 15 minutes of the match-up.

UCSB, which has played five of its six games this season on the road, will return to Meredith Field at Harder Stadium on Friday, Sept. 21 for a FOX Soccer Channel televised pairing against UCLA at 6 p.m. A record crowd is expected, so fans are encouraged to purchase tickets prior to the game by visiting the Ticket Office in the Intercollegiate Athletics Building on campus, call (805) 893-UCSB.
