UCSB’s women’s soccer team received a bounce of good fortune in Monday’s 1-0 victory at Cal State Bakersfield, as the game’s only goal came on a bouncing ball off the foot of Paige Gankema.
The result was UCSB’s first victory of the 2012 season in six tries. The Gauchos (1-4-1) host University of San Francisco in their next game on Friday.
Gankema’s shot bounced high off the ground and over Bakersfield goalie Tori Ornela’s head. Indiana Mead was credited with an assist.
It was Gankema’s first goal of the season and UCSB’s first from any player since a 2-1 loss to Kansas in the season-opener. Miranda Cornejo is the only other Gaucho to have scored this season.
The UCSB defense, meanwhile, recorded its second shutout in three games with McKenna Henry protecting the net.
CSUB plays Bucknell in its next game at the Saint Mary’s Tournament this weekend.
