Andy Iro is back in soccer.
The former UCSB All-American defender and member of the 2006 national championship team, signed a contract with Stevenage FC of England’s League One. Terms were not disclosed, and the signing is subject to international clearance.
The 6-foot-5 Iro has been out of soccer since the 2011 MLS season. He was traded by the Columbus Crew to Toronto FC and played in 13 matches for Toronto. The club did not re-sign him for this season.
Iro, 27, was drafted by the Columbus Crew after finishing his college career at UCSB. The Crew won the MLS Cup in his rookie year with the team in 2008.
The signing with Stevenage marks a return to his native England. Iro was born in Liverpool.
The center-back will be reunited with former Crew teammate Robbie Rogers. Rogers is currently on loan at Stevenage from Leeds United.
The pair will play under Gary Smith, the former MLS Cup-winning coach of the Colorado Rapids who took over at Stevenage last winter.
Stevenage, located in the city of Hertfordshire, plays in the third tier of English football.
