As it has for the first part of the season, the defense came through again for the Dos Pueblos football team on Friday night.
But this night proved to be a special one for the offense. The Chargers moved the ball with a balanced attack and beat visiting Rio Mesa 42-28 in a non-league game at Scott O’Leary Stadium.
Dylan Rohde rushed for 117 yards on 16 carries and scored a touchdown, Anthony Spiritosanto and David Blevins each scored rushing touchdowns and Nico Bornand caught two TD passes in the Chargers’ best offensive performance of the season.
Bornand’s 65-yard touchdown pass from quarterback LeShon Bell broke the game open for DP. That gave the Chargers a 28-20 lead late in the third quarter.
The Chargers expanded the lead to 35-20 after the defense stopped slippery Rio Mesa quarterback Kado Brown short of the first down on a fourth-down faked punt play. Rohde scored the TD on a 37-yard run.
Brown was a handful for the DP defense. He earlier had a 26-yard TD run that cut the Chargers’ lead to 21-20 in the third quarter. The Spartans missed their PAT kick.
Down 21-7 after a 5-yard TD run by Spiritosanto, Brown set up Rio Mesa’s second touchdown with a 62-yard run early in the third quarter. He passed to Brad Borodaty for a 9-yard score.
Blevins gave DP a 7-0 lead in the first quarter with a 16-yard touchdown run and Bornand made it 14-0 by catching a 50-yard pass from quarterback Nolan Soto.
