Santa Barbara High’s girls volleyball team won its first match of the season on Tuesday night at Royal, claiming a 22-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-22 non-league victory over the Highlanders in Simi Valley.
“It was nice to get a win on the road,” noted Dons head coach John Gannon. “It was warm down there. The girls really stepped it up.”
The victory evens Santa Barbara’s record at 1-1.
Without his two regular middle blockers, Gannon said freshman Jessyca Beksa was able to step in and make a positive contribution. Beksa collected five kills with a .400 hitting percentage.
“It was nice to see her get some really good varsity experience,” Gannon said.
Emma Mascari recorded six kills and did well as the team’s primary setter. Libero Bailey Roach also received praise for a “really good job of passing and exceptional defense.”
The Dons play again on Friday at home against Santa Margarita.
