Kyle Mayfield hit Austin Gallegos on a touchdown pass with 3:20 left in the game to lift the fifth-ranked Cate 8-man football team to a come-from-behind 35-28 win over No. 8 Faith Baptist on Saturday at Cate.
The Rams scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to rally from a 28-14 deficit and beat Faith Baptist for the first time in program history.
“Lessons are learned every day in games,” Cate coach Ben Soto said. “Down 28-14, we could have easily put our heads down. But my guys had some fight in them. This is a good win for our program and and good win for our kids.”
The comeback started with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Mayfield to Max Wankner. That cut the deficit to 28-21.
The Rams tied the score at the 8:13 mark on a Mayfield quarterback sneak and a PAT kick by Erik Lowe.
“Erik Lowe is key for us. He made all five of his extra points,” said Soto.
The Rams defense stopped the pass-happy Faith Baptist offense, and Mayfield directed the winning touchdown drive. He hooked up with Gallegos for the score.
An interception by Matt Vasquez sealed the win for Cate (2-1).
Cate took a 14-0 lead early in the game on a 1-yard run by Mayfield and a 19-yard run by Gallegos.
Faith Baptist then got its offense going and scored four unanswered touchdowns, two in the second quarter and two in the third.
Cate opens Condor League play next Saturday against Laguna Blanca.
