It was all business for the Cate football team in Saturday’s rivalry game against Laguna Blanca.
The Rams scored on the first play from scrimmage en route to a 49-14 rout over the Owls in a Condor League game on a warm afternoon at Cate.
Austin Gallegos took a screen pass from quarterback Kyle Mayfield and raced 54 yards for a touchdown to start a 49-0 romp in the first half against the undermanned and inexperienced Owls. Laguna had only 12 players and seven of them were freshman.
Gallegos scored two more touchdowns in the half. Mayfield threw another TD pass to Max Wankner, and Max Vasquez, John Basar and Michael Martinez added scores to put the game out of reach in the first half.
Cate coach Ben Soto cleared his bench in the second half, which was played using a running clock.
Despite the huge deficit, Laguna Blanca kept playing hard and was rewarded with two touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Quarterback Quentin Tedesco hit Andrew Vignolo on scoring passes of 52 and 44 yards.
Cate improves to 3-1 and 1-0 in league, while Laguna falls to 1-3, 0-2.
