Bishop Diego’s football team is the No. 1 team in the CIF-Southern Section’s Northwest Division based on the set of polls released on Tuesday.
The Cardinals are 2-0 on the season and have beaten their opponents by a combined score of 99-18. Bishop Diego plays its next game at home on Saturday against Valley Christian.
Bishop coach Tom Crawford said a No.1 ranking this early in the season is about being the popular choice at the moment.
“The season has such a long way to go that we are constantly reminding our guys that we have to earn whatever we get week in and week out and, at this stage, it’s about improving weekly to put yourself in the position of being at the top of the polls at season end,” said Crawford.
Crawford isn’t sure if the Cardinals have ever been ranked No. 1.
His reaction to the ranking: “We are doing enough things to garner notice and respect from other coaches and teams. As probably the smallest school in our Division, I think that reflects on the commitment level and desire of our student-athletes. So, from that perspective, it is something they can take pride in.”
Fellow Tri-Valley League member Nordhoff is No. 2 while Torrance, Centennial Compton and South Torrance round out the top five.
Bishop Diego began the season as the No. 2 team in the division behind current No. 3 Torrance. Nordhoff was No. 6.
