Berlo, Allen power San Marcos attack in sweep over Royal

UCSB commit Kristen Berlo pounded 12 kills and sophomore Emily Allen added 11 to power the San Marcos girls volleyball team to a 25-18, 25-13, 25-17 sweep over visiting Royal on Thursday night.

“We have a young experienced team, which is great,” coach Erica Menzel-Downing said. “We have two great senior middles. Berlo is one of the best middles in Southern California and she got on a roll tonight.”

Allen played like a seasoned veteran in her first varsity match.

“She’s played on some high-level teams,” Menzel-Downing said. “She had a fabulous game passing, played great defense; she did it all for us tonight.”

Menzel-Downing also lauded the play of setter Andie O’Donnell, who dished out 21 assists, and the players who came off the bench.

“They did the things we’ve been working on in practice. That was pleasing to the coaching staff,” said Menzel-Downing.

The Royals travel to the San Luis Obispo Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
