Gerald Ben scored both goals as Westmont Men’s Soccer posted a 2-1 win over the Bethesda Flames on Friday afternoon at Thorrington Field. With the win, Westmont improves to 3-2.
Ben’s first goal came in the twenty-third minute. After receiving a pass from Muhammad Mehai, Ben raced toward the goal and shot from 16 yards out.
His second goal came in the fifty-fourth minute on a corner kick. Jonatan Yeeles sent the ball over the crowd assembled in front of the net. Ben, waiting on the other side of the crowd, settled the ball and set his shot into the net.
Bethesda’s goal came in the sixty-eighth minute. Yungi Choo dribbled from 30 yards out then shot from the top of the box.
Westmont will now turn its attention toward Golden State Athletic Conference play which begins next week. On Wednesday at three o’clock, the Warriors will host the Lions of Vanguard at Thorrington Field.
The Warriors will play nine conference games, two games (home and away) against Vanguard, San Diego Christian and Hope International, and one game each against Biola, Concordia, Arizona Christiana and The Master’s.
The unbalanced schedule is a result of a pod-scheduling system that divides the eight-team conference into two pods of four teams each. Teams play each team in their pod twice and teams in the other pod once.
The pod scheduling system, however, has no effect on the conference standings. Teams will receive three points for a win and one for a tie with all teams listed in one standing.
The top six teams at the conclusion of the regular season will advance to the GSAC Tournament with the top two teams receiving a bye in the first round.
