Carpinteria’s girls tennis team kicked off its 2012 season with a 17-1 non-league victory over Mission Prep on Tuesday afternoon.
The Warriors are coming off their best season in school history as they reached the CIF Division 5 championship match after winning their first Frontier League title in 34 years.
“It was a solid start to the season for the Warriors,” said head coach Charles Bryant in a post-game email report. “We were able to try out a few new doubles combinations and also rest a few of our injured players.”
Erin Saito and Lesly Zapata are the returning Frontier League doubles champions and won their first three sets of the year without dropping a game.
Catalina Maldonado also won three sets in doubles. Maldonado teamed with Natalie Saito in two wins before Gabi Montes subbed out Saito in the final round.
“We played well but unfortunately Mission Prep was without a few of their starters which would have made the match a little tighter,” Bryant noted.
Next up for Carpinteria (1-0) is Oak Park on Thursday.
