A penalty kick in the thirty-first minute proved to be the only goal of the game as No. 9 Westmont Women’s Soccer (0-1-1) suffered a 1-0 loss to Missouri Valley (1-0) in Baldwin City, Kansas. The Warriors outshot Missouri Valley 15-8 and posted a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal but could not find the back of the net.
“We didn’t start the game great and we gave away a PK,” said Westmont head coach Kristi Kiely. “We made some adjustments and I thought the players responded well overall. We outshot them 11-0 in the second half and could not finish. We are going to have to continue to work hard and make adjustments.”
After the game, Kiely expressed frustration over a play just before Missouri Valley’s penalty kick. “Just three minutes before, Aolani (Rueff) got on the ball and drove 15-20 yards to inside the penalty box on the end line. She was clipped from behind by a Missouri Valley player but was not awarded a penalty kick. It sure felt like the referee called it on one end and not the other. I wish Lani had been award the PK because of the effort she made on that play.”
The Warriors will not play again until Friday, August 31 when they will host Marymount at 4:00 p.m. at Thorrington Field.
