Brandie Harris and Justina Silva tallied second-half goals on Thursday and SBCC shut out Rio Hondo 2-0 in the opening round of the Nike Women’s Soccer Classic at Ventura College.
“We were going against the wind in the first half and Rio Hondo is a good team,” explained coach John Sisterson. “We found a way to play attractive soccer in the second half.”
The Vaqueros improved to 2-0 with their second straight 2-0 triumph.
Harris, a freshman forward from Dos Pueblos High, scored for the second consecutive game. She took a pass from Debbie Arreola in the 53rd minute and volleyed it in from the penalty area. “It was a pretty goal, the ball never touched the ground,” said Sisterson.
In the 67th minute, Sandy Grimaldo made a nice backheel move to elude a defender, then set up Justina Silva for the second goal.
SBCC returns to Ventura College on Saturday to take on West Valley at 11 a.m.
