UCSB men’s water polo team on hand for season bests at Nite Moves

Wednesday evening’s Nite Moves, which featured an appearance by the UCSB men’s water polo team, experienced some of the fastest times so far this season.

The seventeenth week of races saw new season-bests in the Men’s and Women’s 1k ocean swim, as well as the women’s aquathon.

In the Men’s 5k run, Bryan Fernandez was just five seconds off Michael Coe’s season-best time of 15 minutes and 11 seconds set on May 30.

Addi Zerrenner was even closer to top-time holder in the women’s run, posting a time of 18:25 that was just two seconds slower than Amy Alzina the week before.

Chuckie Roth and Carly Pon shattered the previous bests in the 1k ocean swim. Roth’s 12:24 is nearly a minute better than any other male this summer while Pon’s 13:35 was the first sub-14 minute swim by a female.

Michelle Eskandari then became the second female under 14 minutes in the ocean swim on her way to the record in the women’s aquathon. The new standard set by Eskandari is 36:24. She also became the first woman of the season to finish first overall in the aquathon.

The UCSB men’s water polo team, whose season begins on September 1, participated in the ocean swim. Head coach Wolf Wigo outpaced all of his players with the next-fastest, freshman Sjors Van Alphen, 14 seconds behind.

Of course, Wolf Wigo was wearing a wetsuit, and none of his players were, not it’s not really fair to say he outpaced them. Wetsuits gives a 75-90 second advantage over 1000m.
