The 2012 SBCC women’s golf squad is filled with new faces, including five freshmen on the six-player roster.
“We’ve got a completely new team,” said coach Chuck Melendez. “The obvious thing is our inexperience. The positive part is we’ll be able to mold them into a team.”
Freshmen Megan Herrera (St. Bonaventure High) and Charlotte Skjonsby (Newport Harbor) have looked strong in practice.
“They’ve both shot in the 70s,” Melendez reported. “That’s what we’re looking for. We’re not very consistent yet but I think we have a lot of talent and our attitude is good.”
Skjonsby (pronounced Shonsby) was fifth in the Sunset League last year and earned first-team all-league honors.
The Vaqueros open on Monday in the South Coast Classic and WSC No. 1 at Olivas Park in Ventura. On Friday and Saturday, they’ll play in the Desert Classic at Palm Springs. On Sept. 10, they’ll make their only home appearance in WSC No. 2 at the Santa Barbara Golf Club.
“I think we’ll do well,” added Melendez. “I don’t know what the rest of the league has and I‘m not sure if Canyons has their state champion back. Glendale (the state runner-up) and Canyons were both very good last year. Our conference is always strong.”
