Greg Mahle has become the most-decorated freshman in UC Santa Barbara baseball history as he garnered his third All-American award on Monday.
The Westminster, Calif. native was named to the Second Team Freshman All-American Team by Perfect Game, based on his ability to both hit and pitch for the Gauchos this season.
Mahle hit .347, which was fifth-best in the conference, and tied for the team lead with 35 RBI. He was also the Gauchos’ closer as he recorded a team-best four saves and struck out 45 batters in 46.1 innings pitched. Earlier in the season, he was named to the 20-person Two-Way Player of the Year Watch List.
The only Big West player named to Perfect Game’s two-team All-American squad, Mahle had already been honored as a Freshman All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and was Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. He is the first Gaucho to be named to three national All-American squads. Mahle was also named to the All-Big West Second Team following his freshman campaign.
