Shark attack affects Reef & Run, Nite Moves

Tuesday’s reported shark attack off of East Beach on Tuesday has led the City of Santa Barbara to issue a warning to swimmers with a swim-at-your-own-risk policy for 72 hours.

As such, the ocean swims at Wednesday’s Nite Moves and Thursday’s Reef & Run will not be conducted.

A seal was found on Tuesday with confirmed great white shark bite marks.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are cancelling this week’s Reef and Run swim events,” read an email issued on Tuesday. “However, we love our Thursday nights at East Beach and will still have our musical act and Post-Race Party at East Beach Grill.”

The beach run is still a go, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Nite Moves will still host its weekly 5k run followed by music and food, but no buoys or lifeguards will be in the water to oversee the ocean swim.

Nite Moves organizer Jake Clinton wanted to make up for having to cancel the swim and posted on the Nite Moves Facebook page Wednesday: “…an extra keg to off set the NO SWIM tonight.”
