The USA Women’s Water Polo Team had a bit of a scare in Monday’s Olympic opener as the Americans barely edged Hungary 14-13 in a pool-play match.
Team USA is coming off a silver medal in 2008.
Santa Barbara High alum Kami Craig scored once in a game that saw Maggie Stephens tie an Olympic single-game record with seven goals.
Craig scored Team USA’s first goal after halftime on an assist from Kelly Rulon. Hungary trailed 8-7 at the break but scored the first goal of the third period. Craig’s score put Team USA in the lead for good.
The Americans play again on Wednesday against Spain. Their final pool-play match is Friday against China.
Tugce Canitez, Westmont Women’s Basketball – Canitez and her national team from Turkey improved to 2-0 in pool play with a 61-57 victory over the Czech Republic on Monday.
Next up for Turkey is Team USA, also 2-0, on Wednesday.
After playing 17 minutes in Turkey’s first game, Canitez saw only one minute of court time on Monday.
