Goleta Valley takes deciding game from DP

Goleta Valley South’s?Dylan Shugart and Jake Sofro came up big in Thursday’s District 63 Championship game at Girsh Park, leading GVSLL’s 11/12 All-Stars to an 8-4 victory over Dos Pueblos in the third game between the two teams in six days.

Starting pitcher Jake Sofro threw four scoreless innings against Dos Pueblos.

Shugart knocked in four runs on a two-run double in the second inning and a two-run home run to centerfield in the fourth inning.

Goleta Valley was able to build an 8-0 lead behind its bats and the strong starting pitching from Sofro, who held DP scoreless through four innings. It was the first time DP had been held scoreless through four innings in nine postseason games.

Dos Pueblos rallied with four runs in the top of the fifth. Nick Baker connected for a two-run home run while Jake McBride and Will Yamasaki added RBI singles.

Nick Baker and Thomas Jimenez finished with two hits each for Dos Pueblos.

Goleta Valley advances to the Sectional Tournament, starting on Saturday in Nipomo. GV’s first game is on Sunday against the winner of Saturday’s game between Moorpark and Arroyo Grande.

Thursday’s game was the third between the two teams in less than a week. Goleta Valley defeated DP 6-5 on Saturday before DP won consecutive games, including a 10-4 victory over GV on Wednesday to force Thursday’s deciding game.
