Dos Pueblos sophomore Stamatia Scarvelis posted the best qualifying mark in Friday’s prelims at the CIF State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High in Clovis.
Scarvelis threw 44-6 to lead the 10 qualifiers for Saturday’s final. She is the CIF-SS Division 2 champion.
Junior Nikki Okwelog of Clovis West had the second best mark on Friday at 43-8.75. Freshman Nia Britt of Alemany was third at 43-7.5, senior Breana Jemison of Carlsbad placed fourth at 43-5 and junior Tanya Sapa of La Sierra was fifth at 42-11.25.
Scarvelis is seeking to become the second member of her family to win a state title in the shot put. Her older brother, Nicholas, won the boys title last year.
Also competing today is DP sophomore Addi Zerrenner in the girls 3200.
