Gaucho swimmers hit water at Olympic Trials

Four UCSB swimmers opened action at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials on Monday in Omaha, Nebraska. A total of 17 current and former Gauchos are competing in the trials that run through July 2.

Randy Aakhus was the first UCSB swimmer in the water and he completed the 400 individual medley in 4:39.35, which ranked him 107th in the morning’s preliminary heats. Andrea Ward finished 106thin the 100 butterfly (1:02.38). In the 100 breaststroke, Tim Freeman had the best Gaucho finish of the day, touching the wall in 1:03.82, which tied him for 55th. Kevin Ferguson finished 111th in the same event (1:06.23).

Tomorrow, 2009 UCSB graduate Katy Freeman will tackle the 100 breaststroke as will current Gaucho Sophia Yamauchi. Garrett Thompson will swim in the 200 free.
