District championship goes to Goleta Valley South 7/8 All-Stars

Goleta Valley South is coached by Andrew Darke, Tony Sandoval and Tim Hoover with players Joaquin Sandoval, David Becchio, Oliver McGibben, Henry Manfredonia, Gino Darke, Zak Lopez, Vince Gamberdella, Gabe Martinez, Chase Hoover, Jake Ewart, Trey Jimenez, Jake Rister, Conner Acuna and Jack Garcia.

The 7-8 All-Star teams from Goleta Valley South and Dos Pueblos Little League faced off on Sunday at Ojai Valley Little League for the District Championship, with Goleta Valley South posting an 8-1 victory.

GVS broke open a close game with five runs in the fourth inning. Chase Hoover, Vince Gamberdella, Gino Darke, Henry Manfredonia, Zak Lopez and David Becchio provided hits in the big inning.

In the fifth inning, a triple by Jake Ewart and three more hits by Jake Rister, Joaquin Sandoval and Oliver McGibben gave Goleta Valley South another two runs.

Rister and Darke shared time on the mound for the champions, limiting Dos Pueblos to one run in six innings.

Gamberdella was named the tournament’s Defensive MVP for his work as the team’s catcher.

The Dos Pueblos All-Stars had won three-straight games entering Sunday’s contest, including an 11-1 victory over Santa Paula on Saturday.

Seven year old kids in all-star competition?  Sounds a little young to me.  When my son played back in the 90’s he was 8 years old playing in the minors league and even though he was the best pitcher in the league he was ineligible for All-Stars because of his age– only 9 and 10 year old players could play on the minors all star team.
