Warriors drop extra-innings heartbreaker

The Carpinteria High baseball team lost 2-1 in a 10-inning marathon of a game to Oaks Christian on Wednesday.

“I could not be more proud of the effort, and the way that our boys conducted themselves,” Warriors head coach Pat Cooney said. “I am only disappointed that our boys didn’t get the win that they deserved.”

Marcus Hutchinson started the game for Carpinteria and left in the seventh inning, striking out six and walking seven.

Colton Rubio came in to relieve Hutchinson and ended up throwing for nearly four innings. He struck out six and walked two.

“Hutchinson and Rubio were fantastic,” Cooney said about the players who led the Warriors in this pitchers’ duel.

Derrick Moore had a base hit to bring home Anthony Roriguez in the sixth inning and score Carpinteria’s only run of the game.

Oaks Christian tied it back up an inning later, but Carpinteria had several chances in the extra stanzas.

The Warriors had a runner on second in the seventh and the ninth innings, and had the tying run on third in the bottom of the tenth.

Carpinteria (9-10 overall, 4-5 Tri-Valley League) will continue its season with a rematch against Oaks Christian away on Friday.
