San Marcos sweeps alumni soccer tripleheader

The Royals ruled the day in the Santa Barbara-San Marcos alumni soccer tripleheader at Peabody Stadium on Saturday.

San Marcos swept the three matches, winning the men?s 35-over division 2-0, the women?s open 5-2, and the men?s open 2-1.

The event was a fundraiser for each school?s soccer and athletic program.

Emile Kraus and James Kiffe gave the Royals a 2-0 lead and goalkeeper Matt Laband made a brilliant diving save on Santa Barbara?s Junior Ybarra in the second 30-minute period in the men?s open division match.

Ybarra would get the Dons on the scoreboard in the third period off a rebound. Santa Barbara, however, couldn?t come up with an equalizer against a steady San Marcos defense.

In the women?s game, Kelley White, a member of the 2006 CIF championship team, and a soon-to-graduate Kaylin Koopmans each scored two goals for the Royals.

Santa Barbara?s Alma Martinez, a member of Mexico?s 2004 Olympic team, tied the score at 1-1 on a beautiful long shot in the second period.

Koopmans, who just completed the track season, scored back-to-back goals to put the Royals ahead 3-1. White found the back of the net early in the third period to make it 4-1.

Betsey Toben Rickard cut the San Marcos lead in half with a shot from the right side.

Brenna Zimmerman, another member of the Royals ?06 CIF title team, completed the scoring.

The Royals got a strong defensive effort from Melissa Robertson, who had her hands full trying to contain skillful Martinez.

In the 35-over match, Beto Moreno scored on a 19-yard free kick, Eric Wipf tallied the second goal off a diagonal pass from Cliserio Sixto and goalkeeper Sven Klein preserved the shutout for the Royals with two big saves in the third period.

The Royals' Over-35 men's team was able to shutout Santa Barbara 2-0 with Sven Klein in goal.
