Former Dos Pueblos volleyball player Caitlin Racich came from behind with her partner Summer Ross to win the first-ever AVCA Collegiate Sand Individual Championship in Gulf Shores, Alabama on Sunday.
That performance came on the heels of Pepperdine’s team championship win on Saturday. The Waves’ women’s sand volleyball team defeated Long Beach State 5-0 in the title match for the university’s first-ever national championship in a women’s sport.
After the team event on Saturday, Racich and Ross continued their championship-caliber play on Sunday by overcoming Long Beach State’s Tara Roenicke and Caitlin LeDoux in the individual finals, 14-21, 21-15, 16-14.
Racich and Ross, representing Pepperdine University, were one of 16 pairs that were selected by the AVCA Sand Volleyball organization based on results from tournaments during the regular season.
The championship match will be televised this June by CBS Sports.
