UC Santa Barbara women’s basketball head coach Carlene Mitchell continues to garner national attention as she has been tabbed to speak at a national conference for coaches.
The first-year coach, who led the Gauchos to their 14th Big West Tournament title with a historic run this past season, will speak at the Villa 7 conference on the Nike Campus in Oregon on May 10. Mitchell will be a key member of the “Young Gun” panel speaking about success as a young coach.
Recently, Mitchell was one of three national nominees for the Maggie Dixon Rookie Coach of the Year Award.
As an assistant at Rutgers, Mitchell attended the annual event and credits The VCU Center for Sports Leadership and Nike for teaming up to help prepare herself and other coaches across the country for the transition from assistant coach to leading a program as a head coach.
“I’m extremely humbled to be asked to speak at this event, which is one of the elite gatherings in the nation,” Mitchell said. “To top off the season we had with these postseason accolades speaks to the time, effort and energy that our team put in with a first-year coach and a first-year staff.”
