Cate School’s Ema Boateng has been named the Gatorade California Boys Soccer Player of the Year, it was announced on Tuesday.
Boateng led the Rams to a Southern Section CIF championship in March. The captain midfielder totaled 32 goals and 19 assists for the season and was named the Division 7 CIF Player of the Year for the second time.
The award recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence but also high standards of academic?achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field.
Boateng has a 3.75 GPA and had been a regular participant in community service projects.
It is an elite group of alumni from past state award-winners in 12 sports, including Abby Wambach (1997-98, Our Lady of Mercy, N.Y.), Derek Jeter (1991-92, Kalamazoo HS, Mich.), Candace
Parker (2001-02, Naperville Central HS, Ill.), Alexi Lalas (1987-88, Cranbrook HS, Mich.), Heather O?Reilly (2001-02, East Brunswick HS, N.J.) and Mark Sanchez (2004-05, Mission Viejo HS, Calif.)
UCSB has given Boateng a full scholarship to play at Harder Stadium starting this fall.
Last year’s winner was Rocklin High School’s Seth Casiple, who was preceded in 2010 by Corona del Mar’s Reed Williams. Jesuit High School’s Adam Jahn won it two years in a row before Williams.
