SBCC’s Sophie Angner and Talia Hudson posted a huge victory in the doubles semifinals of the State Women’s Championships on Saturday, then fell to another team from Ventura in the final at Balboa Tennis Club.
Angner-Hudson, the No. 3 seed, rallied to upset No. 1 Jessica Worring-Sonia Landeros of Ventura 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals.
“We played amazing in the semis,” said coach Debbie Ekola. “It was tough to bring it after that great emotional high.”
Juliana Bacelar-Layne Gallimore, the #5 South seed from Ventura, downed the SBCC duo in the final, 6-4, 6-2.
“Second in the state, that’s not too bad,” said Ekola. “It was a great way to end a great season.”
Earlier in the day, Angner lost to Bacelar, the No. 1 South seed, 6-0, 6-0 in the singles semifinals. Bacelar also beat Angner in last week’s Southern Cal Regional semifinals on the way to winning the title.
