UCSB junior centerfielder Brett Vertigan has been named the Big West Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Monday.
Vertigan went 9-for-16 with eight runs scored as UCSB went 4-0 against USC and Pacific this past week. It was the second time this season that the Garden Grove, Calif. native was honored. He also stole four bases during the week.
The leadoff man scored three game-winning runs, including the winner in the 12th inning of a 5-4 victory at USC last Wednesday.
Against Pacific, Vertigan had six hits in three games and scored five times with all four of his stolen bases over the weekend. He also walked three times and was hit by pitches two other times, allowing him to reach base in 14 of his 21 plate appearances for a .667 on-base percentage.
The Gauchos’ centerfielder has also reached base in every one of the team’s 38 games this season. UCSB plays Saint Mary’s on Monday at 3 p.m.
