Top-seeded Palomar pulled out a close doubles victory to top No. 5 SBCC 5-2 on Tuesday in a Southern Cal Regional women’s tennis semifinal in San Diego County. The Comets improved to 20-0 after Liesl Galleisky-Pamela Cademas edged Henrietta Spetz and Megan Thomas 6-4, 7-5 in the decisive doubles match. SBCC (13-3) was leading in the other two doubles matches when play was halted.
“It couldn’t have been closer,” said Vaquero coach Debbie Ekola. “If we had won one more singles, it would have been 3-3 and I think we would have won two of the doubles and taken the match.
“Palomar is a good team. They have a great No. 1 who’s undefeated.”
Talia Hudson and Lindsay Penner got the SBCC points. Hudson beat Liesl Galleisky 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Penner took care of Brittany Scism 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6.
Sophie Angner-Hudson were leading at No. 1 doubles 4-6, 6-3, 2-0 and Hannah Erickson-Penner were one game away from securing the win at No. 3 with a 6-1, 6-5 lead.
Four Vaqueros will compete in the prestigious Ojai Tournament, which runs Thursday through Saturday. Angner, Hudson and Spetz will compete in singles. Angner-Hudson and Spetz-Thomas are playing doubles.
Angner-Hudson are the top-seeded doubles team a field that features all the top teams from Southern California.
