A two-run triple from Jack Gregson was the start of a seven-run first inning for Bishop Diego on Wednesday, as the Cardinals recorded a 9-5 victory over visiting Santa Clara in a Frontier League game.
Gregson’s triple scored Sam Kwock and Scott Mandrell, erasing a 2-0 lead the Saints had built with their own pair of runs in the top half of the first. Five more runs from the Cardinals made it 7-2 after a long first inning.
Nolan Tooley pitched six innings for the win on the mound. Tooley posted two hits and two runs scored on offense.
Freshman RJ Cordeiro was another Cardinal with two hits to go with two runs batted in.
The decision keeps Bishop Diego, which hadn’t played in almost two weeks because of Spring Break, on top of the Frontier League standings with a 6-1 record. The Cardinals are 11-3 overall.
Nine errors from the two teams may have been a result of rustiness. Bishop hadn’t played in 13 days and Santa Clara eight days.
“It wasn’t the most well played game. We were able to take advantage when we could,” explained Bishop Diego assistant coach Kai Solin. “You have to win ugly sometimes.”
The two teams face each other again on Friday at Santa Clara.
