Freshman pitcher Shelby Wisdom has garnered Big West Conference Pitcher of the Week and College Sport Madness Softball Big West Player of the Week honors after an outstanding week in the circle for the Gauchos.
The Elk Grove, Calif. native led UCSB to five consecutive wins last week, including a doubleheader sweep of Cal State Bakersfield and a conference series sweep of UC Riverside.
Wisdom tossed a total of 18 innings during the week and three complete games. She compiled a 1.00 ERA across her five games, allowed just five runs (four earned) on 18 hits, and struck out 33 batters.
In game one against the Highlanders, she pitched six shutout innings before being relieved by Andriana Collins. During the second game of the series, she was one strikeout shy (11) of her career-high. The five-game winning streak is her longest of the season.
At the plate, Wisdom batted .333 with a team-best five runs coupled with four RBI. She posted a career-best three hits in the opener against the Highlanders to go along with three RBI and a home run.
The honors mark the first of the season for Wisdom, who now holds a 16-12 record. She needs just two more wins to tie the school record for single season pitcher victories.
The Gauchos will return home this weekend to host first-place Pacific in a three-game conference series, which will begin with a noon doubleheader on Saturday, April 21 at Campus Diamond.
