The Bishop Diego High baseball team jumped out to an early lead in a road game against Santa Clara on Friday and protected it to earn a 3-2 victory.
The Cardinals scored all three of their runs in the first inning and were stingy with their defense for the remainder of the day.
J.D. Yonke started the game and did what was necessary for the victory, despite a frustrating outing.
“J.D. wasn’t his best today, but he battled and kept the game close,” coach Kai Solin said about his pitcher.
Aidan Williams came in to relieve Yonke in the fifth inning and immediately found himself in a jam. With just one out, Santa Clara had runners on first and second base, but center fielder Jack Gregson caught a line drive and fired it back to second base for an inning-ending double play.
Santa Clara was unable to generate any more quality scoring opportunities and Williams received the save and protected Yonke’s perfect 5-0 record on the season.
Bishop Diego (12-3 overall, 7-1 Frontier League) will play next on Wednesday at home agianst Mission Prep.
