Eleventh-ranked Concordia evened the season series with Westmont with a 13-6 Golden State Athletic Conference win on Tuesday afternoon at Russ Carr Field. The Eagles, (27-14, 16-8 GSAC) are in second place in the GSAC, five games behind #5 Azusa Pacific (33-8, 21-3).
Westmont (19-20-1, 10-14) is tied with Fresno Pacific (21-18, 10-14) for fifth place in the conference standings. At the end of the regular season, the top six teams will advance to the GSAC Tournament. Westmont and Fresno Pacific are one game ahead of seventh place San Diego Christian (17-26, 9-15).
The Warriors scored a single run in each of the first three inning to take a 3-0 lead. However, Concordia put up seven runs in the top of the fourth with four of the runs coming off a grand slam by Aaron Gates which cleared the right field fence.
The Warriors added a single run in the fourth, another in the sixth and one in the ninth, but it was not enough to threaten the Eagles’ advantage.
Westmont starter JP Cohn was charged for the loss. Cohn pitched three and two-third innings, giving up seven runs on eight hits.
Andrew Brooks, who came in for the Eagles in the fourth inning, was awarded the win. Brooks pitched six innings giving up two runs on three hits.
The Warriors have eight games remaining in the regular season, but will not play again for nine days. On Thursday, April 19, the Warriors open a four-game series with Azusa Pacific with the first game taking place in Azusa beginning at 3:00 p.m. The series continues in Azusa on Friday before moving to Westmont’s Russ Carr Field for a doubleheader on Saturday that begins at noon.
The final four games will be played the following week against Vanguard.
