Nolan Tooley made one run stand up with a one-hit pitching performance, leading Bishop Diego to a 1-0 victory at Villanova Prep in a Frontier League baseball game on Tuesday.
“Nolan hasn’t been able to pitch much for us because we’ve gotten good pitching from two guys,” Bishop Diego assistant Kai Solin said. “He got the start today and was great on the mound. He pitched with good tempo and pace, and the defense played well behind him. He was pretty overpowering for us today.”
Tooley struck out six and walked one. The lone hit came in the fourth inning, but the baserunner was erased attempting to stretch it into a double.
“The ball was hit into the gap in left-center and Jacob Salcedo made a nice play to cut it off and made a great throw to second base,” said Solin.
Bishop Diego scored the game’s only run in the first inning. A walk to Sam Kwock and singles by Scott Mandrell and Jack Gregson loaded the bases. Kwock scored on a double play ball hit by Aidan Williams.
Villanova starter Sean Rothfuss pitched well enough to win. He allowed only two hits
“He was able to keep us off balance,” said Solin.
The win improves Bishop’s records to 9-3 overall and 4-1 in league. Villanova Prep is 5-8, 2-3.
“They swept us last year and beat us in our first meeting last week, so it was nice to finally get a win off them,” said Solin.
