SBCC’s Sophie Angner won a pair of matches in singles and doubles on Friday to move into the quarterfinals of both Community College Women’s Divisions at the 112th Ojai Tournament.
The freshman from Sweden cruised past Brianna Wood of Victor Valley 6-2, 6-0 and Camille Requiestas of Riverside 6-0, 6-2. She’s won 36 of 42 games in her three victories.
Angner will take on Robin Zhou of De Anza in Saturday’s quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m. at the Ojai Athletic Club.
SBCC’s other two singles players fell in the Round of 32. Talia Hudson lost a tough 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 decision to Emma Sheehan while Henrietta Spetz fell to Jessica Worring, also of Ventura, 6-1, 6-2.
Hudson’s match lasted 4 hours and 20 minutes. She was ahead 5-2 in the third set before suffering an injury and dropping the last five games.
Angner-Hudson are the No. 1 seed in doubles. They knocked off Mercedes Guerriero-Kentra Merriweather of San Diego City 6-1, 6-2 and Maja Martincevic-Amber Nelson of Grossmont 6-2, 6-2 in the Round of 16.
They’ll battle Madelyn Koehly-Haley Moss of Orange Coast in the quarterfinals on Saturday in a 12:30 p.m. match at the Ojai Athletic Club.
